ANCIENT GREEK FOOD
The ancient Greeks had a variety of different food in their diets. food in ancient greece mostly consisted of grapes, figs, fish, meat, olive oil and bread. Pork or lamb would only be eaten at festivals or religious feasts unless the ancient greek family was wealthy. The best way for ancient greeks to get their protein and essential vitamins was to eat fish. Ancient greeces one main fruit was the olive. The olive was very easy to grow in the mountainous terrain most of greece has. .BREAKFAST, LUNCH AND DINNER Just like we do today ancient greeks ate three main meals of the day breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food that is the most common in these ordinary meals is bread dipped in wine. Breakfast consists of usually only bread dipped in wine. Lunch consists of a variety of things like bread dipped in wine, dried fish and cheese. Dinner was most important meal of the day to ancient greeks. This meal consisted of fish and fruits and honey cakes for dessert. DRINK IN ANCIENT GREECE The most common drink in ancient Greece was wine. Wine was very easy to make because of their capability to grow lots of grapes. Ancient greeks would often water down wine because if they would drink it straight it would be considered barbaric. Milk was rarely drank in ancient greece because again it was considered barbaric. Water was another drink that the ancient greeks had, considering you have to drink water to survive. DINNER PARTIES/HAVING PEOPLE OVER FOR DINNER Ancient greeks enjoyed having people over for dinner, men would often get together to have special dinner parties called symposiums. For an ancient greek an average dinner party would consist of giving a wine offering to the gods then the men would drink and talk about politics and morals. Dinner parties were not allowed to be attended by women or even any parties.To entertain their guests Ancient greeks would often hire young boys and girls to play music or dance. UTENSILS The ancient greeks did not usually eat with utensils. The only one type of eating utensil the ancient greeks ate with was a spoon and sometimes they would even not use a spoon and eat with their hands. Ancient greeks usually used bread or a spoon for thick soups and bread as napkins. After the ancient greeks ate they would wipe themselves with the bread and would throw it on the ground for their dogs or slaves to eat. |
